The Promise of 1989

On November 20, 1989, leaders from countries all around the world signed a special promise called the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is the longest list of children's rights ever written down — the right to go to school, the right to play, the right to be safe, the right to have a family, the right to say what you think.

The United Nations chose November 20 as Universal Children's Day to celebrate the day grown-ups in every country made these promises to kids.

Today is also a day to remember that not every child has the same chances. Some kids are still hungry. Some still cannot go to school. So this day is not only about parties — it is about asking ourselves a real question: what can WE do to help every child, everywhere, be safe and happy?
