The Story of Qu Yuan

More than two thousand years ago, in the ancient kingdom of Chu, there lived a wise and loyal poet named Qu Yuan. He loved his country and gave the king advice to keep the people safe.

But the king did not listen, and Chu was attacked by its enemies. On the 5th day of the 5th month, Qu Yuan was so heartbroken that he walked into the Miluo River and was lost forever.

The villagers loved him. They rushed to their boats and paddled as fast as they could, beating drums to scare the fish away. They threw sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves into the water, hoping the fish would eat the rice and not Qu Yuan. From that day on, every 5th day of the 5th month, families race dragon boats, eat zongzi, and remember a man who put his country first.
